A intervenção localiza-se na Rua do Pisão, um arruamento sinuoso que outrora acompanhava paralelamente a Ribeira dos Moinhos — antiga levada em cantaria aparelhada que, durante séculos, funcionou como eixo estruturante da cidade de Angra. Com uma relação estreita com a baía, esta linha de água foi fundamental para o desenvolvimento urbano e industrial da cidade, alimentando o porto e abastecendo diferentes sistemas públicos e produtivos.

No interior dos quarteirões, a sucessão de terraços sustentados por muros de basalto molda a topografia e estabelece plataformas para habitações, hortas e pomares. Estes elementos, justapostos e adaptados ao relevo, compõem uma paisagem urbana irregular, marcada por variações volumétricas e formais, que desce pelo anfiteatro natural de Angra até ao Rossio — atualmente a Praça Velha.

O projeto consistiu na reabilitação e ampliação de um edifício histórico que funcionava originalmente como residência familiar, incluindo também a recuperação paisagística do terreno envolvente. A intervenção teve como referência a flora característica da Ilha Terceira, privilegiando a preservação de espécies existentes e a introdução de espécies autóctones, com o objetivo de criar um mostruário da vegetação endémica local.

O edifício original, datado do século XVI e classificado no Plano de Salvaguarda da cidade de Angra do Heroísmo (Património Mundial), foi integralmente reabilitado ao nível interior, dando origem a quatro unidades de alojamento turístico. O terreno adjacente, com cerca de 600 m² distribuídos em dois socalcos, oferece a sul uma vista panorâmica sobre o Monte Brasil e o Ilhéu das Cabras. Situado no topo da malha urbana, o conjunto abre-se sobre o casario e tem como pano de fundo o céu e o Atlântico.

A premissa principal do projeto foi potenciar essa paisagem única, tornando-a parte integrante da experiência de estadia. Aproveitando a topografia existente, foi implantado um novo edifício que permanece invisível a partir do volume principal. A nova construção adapta-se ao declive do terreno e a sua cobertura integra-se no jardim superior. Dois óculos abertos neste jardim — evocando simbolicamente os vulcões que formaram a ilha — ocultam pátios ingleses que levam luz natural aos quartos dos dois novos apartamentos.

The project is located on Rua do Pisão, a winding street that historically ran parallel to the Ribeira dos Moinhos — an old stone-lined water channel that served for centuries as a structural spine for the city of Angra. Closely connected to the bay, this watercourse played a vital role in the city’s development, fueling industry, organizing the urban layout, and powering the port infrastructure.

Within the city blocks, a series of basalt stone terraces supported small houses, gardens, and orchards. These platforms, adapted to the natural topography, create a layered urban fabric of volumes and surfaces cascading down Angra’s natural amphitheater toward the Rossio — now Praça Velha.

The project involved the rehabilitation and extension of a historic building that once served as a family home, along with the landscape restoration of the surrounding terrain. The landscape design was inspired by, and integrated with, the native flora of Terceira Island, prioritizing the conservation of existing species and the introduction of other endemic varieties to create a living exhibition of local biodiversity.

The original 16th-century structure, listed under the Safeguard Plan of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo, was fully rehabilitated and internally reconfigured to house four tourist apartments. The adjacent plot, measuring around 600 m² and spread across two stepped platforms, enjoys a privileged southern view over Monte Brasil and Ilhéu das Cabras. Positioned at the city’s upper edge, the property overlooks the rooftops, with the Atlantic and sky forming its horizon.

A key premise of the design was to fully embrace and highlight this striking landscape, offering it as a central element of the visitor experience. Taking advantage of the natural terracing, a new volume was discreetly introduced—completely concealed from the original house. Its form is adapted to the terrain, and its roof merges seamlessly with the upper garden. Two circular openings in the garden — metaphorically referencing the volcanic origin of the island — conceal English courtyards that channel daylight into the bedrooms of the two new apartments.
